November is an important month to highlight men's health. This is important because, due to a range of social factors, they are less likely to seek help for physical, mental and sexual issues. It is therefore the responsibility of all of us to talk about it in order to reduce stigma and allow men to receive the support and treatment they need.
One of the topics highlighted this month is prostate health. The prostate is a gland that is part of the male reproductive system. It is responsible for the secretion of enzymes that make up part of the seminal fluid (semen); it also takes care of the passage of urine and semen to the urethra and plays a role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics. The prostate therefore takes a central place in male sexual and reproductive health.
Prostate problems can cause a variety of symptoms, including frequent urination, blood in the urine, pain after ejaculation, lack of bladder control, and many others. Sexual function can also be significantly affected: erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory disorders.
Here are some recommendations to maintain good prostate health:
- Diet: Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, prioritize plant-based foods, and limit animal fat intake. Some studies also support the benefits of eating foods rich in lycopene (a red pigment found in tomatoes) for its antioxidant properties.
- Exercise: Exercise has several benefits for prostate health through heart health, lowering blood pressure, and weight regulation.
- Reduce caffeine and cigarette consumption.
- Talk to your doctor: from the age of 50 it is recommended to have regular screenings.
- Maintain good general health: sleep well, stay hydrated, prioritize your mental health, particularly by reducing your stress level.
* Note that certain populations are genetically at higher risk of developing prostate disease, including men of black ethnic origin (Caribbean and sub-Saharan African) and men with a family history.
Did you know that in addition to playing an important role in sexual function, the prostate is also an erogenous zone? In fact, prostate stimulation can amplify sexual pleasure as well as cause orgasms. One way to explore this area is with the use of a prostate stimulator.
